“For 25 years, friends who have shared the vision of
Susan G. Komen for the Cure have become partners in advancing our mission. Together we have made tremendous progress toward eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through research, education, screening and treatment. The generosity of our donors is vital as we continue our efforts to help breast cancer patients today, as well as to invest

About Us

CAPS Board of Directors:

Connie Perry

Event Chairperson

Connie combines her love of the Adirondacks, paddling and hiking, and nature in her new business, Frisky Otter Tours, Inc.  Coming from a background in Education and having been a Recreation Therapist working with people with disabilities, an outdoor leader for an alternative school in Montana, and for the last 10 years, a manager of a paddlesports and outdoor gear store in the Adirondacks, Connie has returned to her roots of teaching and connecting spiritually with nature.  Her passion and enthusiasm have helped her spearhead One Square Mile of Hope.  Connie lost a coworker to breast cancer several years ago and has also watched her mother battle this terrible disease.  She feels this is an important cause and is very excited to incorporate her love of kayaking into an event to raise funds for breast cancer research.  This event would not be possible without her leadership and commitment to the cause.

Joan Armstrong

Several years ago my aunt died from breast cancer. She found a lump in her breast but was afraid to go to the doctor and just forgot about it until she became very ill and had been diagnosed with breast cancer and bone cancer. This was in 1978. If she were alive today this would not have happened. Since that time I've had several friends who have had breast cancer and today are doing well. Our "One Square Mile of Hope" event is important to me because it continues to raise the awareness of women to early detection and prevention. Research offers us the hope of a cure! My dream is that my grand daughter will not see breast cancer as a dreaded disease but as an illness that can be cured. I'm a retired teacher who enjoys the challenge of an event like this and the benefits it brings to all women.

Penny Stuart

Penny resides in Inlet, NY and Cazenovia, NY.  She has been coming to the Adirondacks her whole life.  Her family has had a camp on Fourth Lake for over 100 years.  She loves the outdoors.  Her interests include golfing, hiking and kayaking.  In the winter she enjoys cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.  She knits in her downtime.

Penny lost an aunt to breast cancer six years ago.  She has a cousin who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  She is very enthusiastic about One Square Mile of Hope and is very excited to see its success.

Adele (Murdock) Burnett,

Town of Inlet Tourism Director

Adele has lived in Inlet her whole life. She attended the Inlet Common School kindergarten through sixth grade, graduated from Town of Webb High School in 1987 and attended some college at Siena and MVCC.  Her first job was at the Gaiety Ice Cream Shop (now the Tamarack Café) as a soda jerk and in 1987 she started waiting on tables and tending bar for her cousin Kathy (Murdock) Hansen at The Ole Barn where she worked until 1998.  Between 1985 and 1990 she also cleaned for many of the area cottage owners, and babysat for many of the summer residents and visitors.  In 1996 she started working for the Town of Inlet as a Police Dispatcher, then joined the Information Office part time as a clerk while still dispatching, and eventually became the Tourism Director in 2002.

Since 1999 she has also been involved with the Town of Inlet as Deputy Town Clerk and clerk to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Clean Waters Committee.  She worked with members of the community as the administrative assistant for the town’s Comprehensive Master Plan.  She is  a member of the Inlet Fire Ladies and Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club, president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 1402, new member of the Eastern Star Dewey Old Forge Chapter 449 and helps out the Inlet Youth Commission as much as she can.

She loves this area, and is proud to raise her children here.  Adele is very excited to be a part of an event that will bring people to Inlet to raise money for the research and awareness of breast cancer, and believes there is no better way to do it than in a boat on beautiful Fourth Lake!

Mitch Lee

Mitch Lee is a native West Central Adirondack resident. A graduate of the Inlet Common School and Town of Webb High School and Holds a B.S. from the State University at New Paltz and a M.S. from Syracuse University. He works in the Inlet Information and Tourism Office and is an avid outdoors-men. His column Growing Up Adirondack, written for the Weekly Adirondack News paper explains his passion for the surrounding environment and the people who share in it. He spends his free time hiking, fishing and traveling the North East sharing his Adirondack Storytelling skills. He is also a living historian and portrays a soldier from the American Revolution at various recreated battles throughout America. The notion that a group of folks would gather in his home town to help find a cure for breast cancer and enjoy the solitude that the mountains offer, seemed like a project worthy of investing time. It has been his utmost pleasure to help in the One Square Mile of Hope.

Kristin Condie

CAA Events Coordinator

Kristin has been living in the Adirondacks for 10 years.  She loves the outdoors.  She is a New York State Licensed Guide.  She and her husband owned and operated a guide service for 7 years.  However, her true passion is helping people.  She just recently completed her Masters Degree in Social Work at Syracuse University.  While she has been a full-time grad student, she has been working part-time for the Central Adirondack Association as the Events Coordinator.  She has been happy to be part One Square Mile of Hope, starting a new event for a worthy cause.  Her first child died of cancer five years ago.  Although the types of cancer are different, research into any cancer opens doors for cures to many varieties of cancer.  Her family will be present at the event remembering her Clara while selling “Kids Food” at the food court.

Dale Huebner

Dale is a relative new comer to the Adirondacks. She owned a summer home on Tupper Lake on an Island for 3 years, and 6 years ago moved to Inlet, New York. Previous to moving to Inlet she lived in New Jersey for many years. She has a BS degree in Education from Geneseo University, a Master's Degree in Reading from the University of Scranton and certification as a LDTC to work with children with severe learning disabilities. She was a Reading Consultant for the Wyckoff Schools in NJ for 33 years, owner of a property management business and had a private practice in working with children with reading difficulties.
Presently she is semi retired and living with her partner Robin Dwyer in Inlet. They own Bear Up North Cabins and the Bear in a Tub Laundromat in Eagle Bay. Dale also drives the CTS van and works for the Food Bank. Seeing her Mom die of lung cancer she has always been desirous of eradicating this devastating disease.

Jay Latterman

Jay is happy to now call the Adirondacks home, having lived here full time for 6 years. He moved here with his wife and partner, Joedda, to rescue and renovate The Woods Inn, which they are proudly operating as a year-round old-style Adirondack inn, restaurant and tavern. Jay has always believed that giving to the community is how you get the most out of your community. Within that spirit he has helped out as the co-chairperson of the Inlet Area Business Association, member at-large and treasurer of the Central Adirondack  Association, chairperson of the New York State Sled Dog Championships, active member of the Central Adirondack Trailblazers, providing volunteer trail maintenance  to the Inlet area, co-chairperson of the Adirondack Boating and Outdoor Expo, and loves teaching downhill skiing to the Inlet area school children.

Jay is very proud to be a part of this special event both in what it is doing to showcase our community and community spirit, as well as raising much needed funding and awareness of this most worthwhile cause.

Robin Dwyer

As a minister in New Jersey and here in the Adirondacks the last few years, Robin has seen way too many people affected with cancer.  Working to make this event a success just seemed natural to her.  Robin was a hospital Chaplin,  working in oncology and saw first hand how cancer effects every person around the individual who is suffering.  Families, friends, the hospital staff and all caregivers are effected each time an individual develops cancer.  Working with One Square Mile of Hope has given her an opportunity to focus on a productive way to fight this terrible disease, especially breast cancer which effects so many women and men.

As Pastor of Church of the Lakes in Inlet, co-chair of the Inlet Area Business Association, Vice-President of the Community Transportation Service and a business owner in the community it is very exciting for her to see so many people pulling together for one great cause.  Robin is honored to be a part of the board and to be able to help make One Square Mile of Hope a phenomenal success.

Kathy Queen

Kathy Queen became involved with the “One Square Mile of Hope” project and other Susan G. Komen Foundation events because of her concerns about high incidence of breast cancer and the many people affected by this disease.  The SGK Foundation works to educate people regarding treatment and prevention.  And also to provide support to those people and their families.

Kathy lives in Inlet with her husband, BJ, their 15 year old son, Ryan, and 10 year old daughter, Maggie.  Kathy is President of the Inlet Common School Board of Education and is an officer of the Parent Teacher Partnership.  She assists with the school’s kayaking, Alpine and Nordic ski programs in addition to doing volunteer fundraising for the Herkimer Area Resource Center’s enrichment programs for people with physical and mental disabilities.

She teaches adult and children’s yoga locally.  The Queen family members are avid SCUBA divers and enjoy diving together off St. Eustatius in the Netherland Antilles whenever possible.
